The "New York Post" just put together a list of "The 35 Best Shows on TV...Ever." Here are the top 5
1) The Sopranos
2) All in the Family
3) The Oprah Winfrey Show
4) American Idol
5) The West Wing
These lists always drive me a little crazy because can you fairly judge the best TV show ever in the same grouping with a talk show, comedy and a reality show? Okay, if so what is the criteria? I'd like to think they considered the show's cultural influence, technical writing, production, acting and longevity or in other words the show's ability to create new viewers even after the show has gone off the air by ways of DVD sales, etc.
A fair top 5 list, in no particular order because they are all in a dead-tie for #1, would be:
-The Oprah Winfrey Show...Wow - talk about power. i.e. "Oprah's Favorite Things". She's not just a talk show host but a cultural icon and will forever be a peacemaker. Which I think could be the greatest title ever given to a human being.
-Sex & The City...It will never go out of style. Five women looking for love in the city and the details of their heartbreaks will forever have an audience ready to feel their pain. It's cliche, bubble gum TV that strikes raw human experience better than most. It's episodes are re-runs for life and every girl I know has a "Samantha friend" that drives 'em crazy.
-The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson...He was the Oprah show of his day...a mega powerhouse that would either make or break you! Many actors/comedians will admit that their career took off after their first "Tonight Show appearance". Find a single late-night host that isn't doing their own version of Johnny's Tonight Show! He set the standard and will forever be the King of Late Night.
-LOST...one word: Brilliant! The only thing holding back this beast is it's inability to draw in new fans. You can't just pick up and start in on the storyline...like it or not you have to start with the Pilot forward. BUT - once you get 3 episodes deep you won't stop. LOST brings into question so many issues about faith, God, reality and the human experience. In my opinion this show has it all...now go get Lost.

***Why not American Idol?*** Let me respond to that question by simply saying, just because Hershey's makes and sells more chocolate than anyone else doesn't mean they produce the finest chocolate in the world.
