    Returning Worn Shoes...Wrong?

Tuesday, June 24, 2008, 09:29 AM CST [General]

Can you return a pair of shoes after you've worn them out of the house?  That was my dilemma this morning.  You see, on Friday night our family went out to a local shoe store to find a pair of walking/running shoes for me.  Found those, then also found a cute pair of black flats on the clearance rack.  They were only $25, my size and cute!!  I tried them on in the store, they felt fine, so I bought them.  Yesterday, I wore them to work and I HATED THEM!  They couldn't be more uncomfortable if they tried!!!!!  I HATE THEM!!!!!!!

Now I know why they were on clearance...awful shoes.  Greg said my feet looked like sausages crammed into them...lovely visual.  Thanks Greg.

So, I wanted to take them back but figured there was no way.  Then the calls came in....and I CAN take them back.  I had said that I wouldn't lie, would admit that I wore them outside of the house and if they would then take them back under those conditions, I would return them.  They will!  Who knew...I thought that if you bought an awful pair of shoes that you were stuck with them.  Nope....most stores will take them back for at least store credit.  LOVE IT!  I've never done this before, but today I'm returning the awful shoes.

    Have a great day!

I used to work at a shoe store and the only time we were able to take worn shoes back was if they were defective in some way, strap broke etc. and they needed the receipt to show that they had been recently purchased. Otherwise if it was obvious by the sole that the shoe had been worn outside it was against company policy to take them back. So I would ask the store what their return policy is.

I've actually returned three pairs of shoes in my day...

The first was back in HS when I bought a pair of Basketball shoes. I tried to tighten the Velcro strap and the plastic piece it folded over just snapped off. Little did I know that strap was only for looks. I didn't want the thing flopping around the shoes, so I returned with the intent of buying another pair... they just traded them straight up for an identical pair!

Then I had to buy shoes for work a few years back. I was in a rush to get to work and gabbed a pair in my size without trying them on. By the end of the night I knew that I bought shoes that were too big and that I had to go back and get different ones.

I had of course worn them the entire night (Valeting - so running all over outside in them). I politely asked if it was possible to return them knowing it was my mistake, and the manager at Kohls took them back for store credit... I bought another pair (tried them on this time) but sure enough those began cutting into the back of my ankles after wearing them for a few minutes at work. I promptly put that pair back in the box, and wore my GOLF SHOES (the only other option I had in my car). They took those back too! Luckily the third time was the charm.
I felt like a total cheap skate... but the truth is that sometimes you don't know how a shoe will work till it gets real life experience. And the way to get a return is to not expect one. Then those managers will be more inclined to help you out!
